Sustainable Swimwear: What It Really Means & Why It Matters
The word sustainable gets thrown around a lot these days, especially in the fashion world. But when it comes to swimwear, what does it actually mean?
At Saturday Swimwear, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s the foundation of everything we do. It’s about making choices that prioritize people and the planet without compromising on comfort, style, or function. It’s about slowing down, producing intentionally, and designing swimsuits that last season after season—because looking good shouldn’t come at the cost of the earth or the people who make your clothes.
Let’s start with materials. Most swimwear on the market is made from virgin synthetics like polyester or nylon—materials that rely on fossil fuels and never truly break down. Our suits, on the other hand, are primarily made with ECONYL®, a regenerated nylon spun from rescued ocean waste and landfill-bound materials. It looks and feels just like new, but with a fraction of the environmental impact. It’s buttery-soft, compressive, and built to move with you—whether you’re chasing waves, lounging in a hot spring, or hiking down to a secret swim spot.
But sustainable swimwear isn’t just about the fabric. It’s also about how your suit is made. At Saturday Swimwear, we produce our pieces in small batches, right here in the U.S., working with a woman-owned factory in Los Angeles and finishing many of the details in-house. That means no mass production, no overseas sweatshops, and no hidden corners of the supply chain. You know who made your swimsuit—and they were paid fairly to do it in a safe, supportive environment.
We also believe that sustainability starts with thoughtful design. Our pieces are intentionally timeless, not trend-driven. They’re meant to be mixed and matched, reworn, and re-loved—not replaced every season. We launch new colors and styles slowly and intentionally, based on what our customers actually want, not on some arbitrary fashion calendar.
So why does it matter?
Because the fashion industry is one of the largest polluters in the world. It produces over 92 million tons of textile waste each year and contributes more carbon emissions than international flights and maritime shipping combined. Fast fashion encourages a culture of disposability—and swimwear, with its seasonal nature and fit frustrations, often ends up in the trash after just a few wears. We're here to change that.
When you choose Saturday Swimwear, you're choosing quality over quantity. You're choosing comfort, confidence, and consciousness—all wrapped into one really great swimsuit. And you're helping build a future where fashion can be a force for good.
We know we're not perfect, but we're committed to doing better—every day, every season, every suit.
Thanks for being part of this slow, intentional swimwear revolution. It wouldn’t exist without you.
